Shame

I have felt shame. I bet you have, too.

It’s messages scream through your head relentlessly, telling you that you’re not…

  • Smart enough
  • Thin enough
  • Pretty enough
  • Creative enough
  • Brave enough
  • Fun enough…

Or, when you feel good, it switches it up, shouting,

“Who do you think you are?”

In other words,

You’re…Too Much!

Shame disconnects you from your authenticity and your own authority.  It makes you question yourself and your worth. It can influence how you show up in the world in a number of ways:

  • You might please…and perform for your worth.
  • You hide out in your own life.
  • You find yourself exploding in anger.
  • You drive yourself to be perfect or work too much.
  • You sometimes feel numb, isolated and lonely.
  • You have difficulty trusting and forming close relationships
  • You have trouble with boundaries and may fall into abusive relationships.
  • You engage in compulsive and/or restrictive behaviors to mask the pain or to fix yourself.

In therapy, I can help you connect to yourself and understand the source of your shame. When shame is spoken and shared with someone who can respond with empathy and compassion, your own ability to be compassionate toward yourself can grow. Then, as you learn to trust yourself, you will regain the sense of personal authority to build healthy relationships with yourself and others.
